Midsummer or the summer solstice is the principal festival of the entire year! Witches in some traditions call it Litha. It marks the longest day of the year, and the height of the Sun’s power. The Goddess is heavy with pregnancy, and the earth awaits the coming harvest’s bounty….fertility rites continue in the style of carefree and lusty Beltane. This Sabbat honors the Sun,the honored symbol of protection. Fatherhood and Motherhood are honored as well.
Protective amulets are made during this Sabbat, with Fire being the predominant element now. Fire rituals and Fire Magick abound!
This is the time to gather and dry magickal and medicinal herbs and plants to store for winter use.
Make your own “gris-gris” or charm bag with an understanding of the properties of various herbs.
This Sabbat is celebrated during the daylight hours, rather than at night. Faery folk are active at Midsummer, just as they are at the Beltane Sabbat. They are at the height of their power!
Protect yourself and your children from the mischievous faery folk. Faery raids….ritualized trooping of faeries …..have been reported frequently at Midsummer.
Hang protective herbs such as pine, yucca, thistle, valerian, oak, tomato, hyssop, marigold, garlic, clove, cinnamon, basil, barley, and bay, and make sure to leave food out for the faeries, and they may leave you alone!
Marriage and handfastings are traditional now, as are many prophetic dreams.
Food and drink are abundant, as well. Reunite in a family and friends gathering to celebrate this very magickal time.
Merry Meet and Merry Part, and Merry Meet, Again!
